Description

ABOUT THE PROGRAM: No educational role is more dynamic, complex, or complicated than that of a School Resource Officer (SRO). Scrutiny of policing practices nationwide has led to enhanced pressure on school systems to figure out the best ways to utilize and manage SROs in schools. In order to do this, school units should have a good understanding of the various laws and other legal authorities that impact the SRO position. This webinar will explore the legal landscape surrounding SROs in Maine, discuss best practices for drafting Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with local law enforcement agencies, and examine some of the practical issues that may arise in the SRO context. We’ll talk through topics like:
  • National SRO Trends, Data, and Research;
  • Juvenile Justice Landscape in Maine;
  • Student Searches and Seizures;
  • SRO access to Student Records;
  • SRO Training, hiring, and engagement; and
  • Applicable Policies.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This program is recommended for central office administrators, including superintendents, assistant superintendents, special education directors and coordinators, and curriculum directors. The program is also recommended for building administrators, including principals and assistant principals.
