A Understanding student and employee First Amendment rights has never been more timely or important for school administrators. This session explores the balance between student and educator First Amendment rights versus the school’s obligation to regulate speech in certain circumstances. We will focus on state and federal constitutional rights of free speech and religion in public schools, covering landmark cases like Tinker and discuss best practices for navigating controversial topics in your schools. The goal is to provide you with the knowledge and skills to ensure that your decisions are consistent with local policy and constitutionally sound.AFTERNOON WORKSHOP
1:00 PM - 4:00 PMEmployment Supervision & Investigations
Strengthen your leadership skills and handle employment issues in your building with confidence in this practical half-day training on employee supervision, management, and workplace misconduct investigations in schools. This interactive session provides clear guidance on effective teacher/staff oversight, documentation, and legally sound investigation practices. Attendees will leave with practical tools, real-world examples, and strategies they can apply within their buildings to manage teachers/staff and handle misconduct issues professionally and effectively. Join us to discuss how to manage the following statutory obligations while engaging in active performance management and/or an effective fact-finding process:Topics will include:
- American with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and similar statutes
- Law against discrimination (Title VII, RSA 354-A)
- Statutes governing teacher terminations, removals, and non-renewals (RSA 189)
- Statutes governing public employee labor relations (RSA 273-A)
