In its re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, Congress has abandoned the No Child Left Behind Act and replaced it with the Every Student Succeeds Act. This new law makes fundamental changes in some of the most important and controversial aspects of the NCLB, including:

• The federal role in local education
• Student testing requirements – design, time spent, and opting out
• AYP (“annual yearly progress”) is out
• Consequences for low-performing schools
• Teacher evaluation requirements changed
