Description

About the program:
This conference will highlight school law principles that apply to school board members and their roles and actions. Dan and Michael will focus on the role of school boards in supporting public schools, as well as school board leadership and ethics in the context of often public employment disputes, social media controversies that impact the board, and public concerns that sometimes seem to overtake regular school board business. Our presenters will address:
  • Duties of School Boards and Superintendents: Respective roles and responsibilities
  • Employment Issues: Discussion of Maine employment law as it applies to all employees, including administrators
  • Collective Bargaining: Assessment of the role of the Board and the Superintendent in regards to bargaining and grievances
  • Student Issues: What you need to know about residency, discipline, and the Constitutional rights of students
We will also workshop real life issues facing many school boards and discuss strategies for addressing them.
Who should attend?
This program is designed primarily for school board members and Superintendents.
