All supervisors are tasked with ensuring that their employees are performing to their potential, and that requires creating an effective workplace where performance is rewarded, expectations are clear, and employees who are not performing or are engaging in misconduct are dealt with clearly and fairly.  These tasks are all the more challenging in public schools where union contracts can restrict management’s freedom to deal with performance problems and where it can be difficult to change a negative culture.  In this workshop, two experienced employment lawyers offer essential guidance to supervisors on how to deal effectively with problem behavior.
Topics include:
  • Effective Communication of Performance/Conduct Expectations
  • Use of Job Descriptions and Policies
  • How to Evaluate Employees to Achieve Performance Improvement
  • The keys to successful performance improvement plans
  • Legal restrictions on disciplining public employees
  • The real meaning of Just Cause
  • Investigating Performance or Misconduct Issues
  • Employees’ Weingarten right to union representation
  • Practical guidance for investigating workplace misconduct
  • Tips on drafting discipline letters
Who should attend?
This workshop is designed for anyone who supervises other staff, including Superintendents, Business Managers, Special Education Directors, Principals, Technology Directors, Food Service Directors, Transportation Directors, Athletic Directors, and Facilities Directors.
