Description

About the Institute:   This four-day Institute is designed with busy administrators in mind. In a short period of time, participants will cover materials traditionally taught in a semester-long course. This will be accomplished through significant advance reading assignments, two papers (the first submitted before the Institute and the second submitted after), active class discussion, individual and group presentations, and instruction by attorneys from Maine’s premier school law practice as well as by other specialists.
The Institute is an intense and exciting learning experience for anyone interested in the laws affecting school business administration, including principals, superintendents, business managers, and teachers.
Topics Include:
  • Financing Public Education
  • Maine’s Funding Law – Essential Programs and Services
  • Budget Development and Approval
  • School Borrowing
  • School Construction
  • Basics of Collective Bargaining
  • Understanding Financial Statements and Grant Compliance
  • Torts and Insurance
Instructors:   Lead instruction by Drummond Woodsum attorneys Bill Stockmeyer and Greg Im, joined by special guest instructor Jeremy “Hank” Farrah, a CPA who provides consulting services to schools and municipalities through Hank Farrah Consulting, LLC.
Along with Bill and Greg, other Drummond Woodsum school law attorneys will serve as guest instructors on specific topics throughout the Institute.
This Institute has been approved by the Maine Department of Education to satisfy the school finance and budgeting requirements for all administrator certificates. This is an outstanding opportunity for those who need to satisfy that requirement or for those who may have studied Maine school finance many years ago and find it is time for an update. lt also qualify for C.E.U.s from UMO for a small fee payable by check.

(Note: Although the Institute provides certification and recertification credits, it is not affiliated with a college or university and does not provide graduate school credits.)
